A bento favourite! – learn how to make the everyday bento, a Japanese lunch box - with Atsuko’s Japanese Kitchen cookbook author Atsuko

Bentō boxes are served everywhere in Japan – work places, schools, department stores, and even on the trains. These tasty Japanese lunch boxes have been enjoyed for over 800 years!

A hands-on practical cooking class, making your own authentic Japanese bento filled with onigiri and 5 quick dishes. Firstly, you will learn the simple secrets of Japanese cuisine based on the magic "rule of 5", how to plan and eat a bento the Japanese way.  Then followed by cooking session to create a variety of dishes including karaage chicken, tamago yaki, saikyoyaki salmon, etc..  These are suitable for cooking in a busy morning as many Japanese people make their own bento every day. However, you will learn the hints of making typical dishes suitable for your bento.

What you'll learn

  • Umesu zuke: Ume-pickled red radish

  • Miso orange marinated salmon: Grilled with sesame seeds (vegetarian option: fried tofu)

  • Kara age: Japanese fried chicken marinated in soy sauce, mirin, ginger and garlic (tofu option available)

  • Tamago yaki: Sweet rolled omelette with spring onion

  • Yaki bitashi: Grilled seasonal vegetables with wasabi and soy dressing

  • Onigiri: Japanese rice balls with your choice of fillings and condiments

  • Miso dama: Instant homemade miso soup balls (make your own quick miso soup anytime!)

    • Fine quality ingredients (e.g. sashimi grade quality from Moxon's fishmongers)

    • Online recipe booklet

    • Sit down meal at the end of the class (or take away option)

    • Atsuko’s Kitchen Apron to wear in the class (feel free to bring your own)

    • Refreshments throughout the class

    • All kitchen tools and equipment

    • Small Groups: Maximum 8-10 guests for personalized attention

    • Collaborative Learning: Some elements may involve working in pairs, don’t worry if you’ve come alone – it’s a great way to meet new people and have a laugh

    • Beginner-Friendly: No prior cooking experience required

    • Dress Code: Comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes recommended - Aprons will be provided for the cooking classes. You can also bring your own apron if you wish.

    • Age Requirements: Minimum age 14 (under-14s must be supervised by a guardian with full-price ticket)

    Parking near Columbia Road is free on weekends, though Sunday gets very busy due to the Flower Market; on weekdays, there’s one free hour, then charges apply.
